When do I apply?

There are different deadlines for every school, but most applications open sometime in August. The earliest applications will be due around the middle of October, while some schools have deadlines extending into the spring.

Early Decision: Applying to a school under their early decision deadline means that you are 100% sure that it is your top choice because the decision is binding. If you are accepted under an early decision agreement, you must attend. This means that you will often have to commit to the school before you receive a financial aid offer.

Early Action: Applying to a school under their early action decision deadline means that you will receive your admissions decision earlier, but you are not bound to attend if admitted. It is usually better to apply early action, especially for competitive schools.

Regular Decision: Applying to a school under their regular decision deadline means you will receive your admissions decision within the spring, and are still not bound to attend if admitted.

Check your schools of interest to know their deadlines and map out when you plan to apply.

What Do I Need?

Unknown-3_edited.png

Most applications will ask you general questions about yourself, the classes you've taken, extracurricular activities, and your family. Here are some supplemental items that you will mostly need:

  • Transcript: High School and College if you have taken community college classes

  • Letters of Recommendation

  • Essay

  • Test Scores: UNC System institutions (NC Public colleges and universities) are not requiring scores for 2020-2021 applicants. Some NC private institutions may still require scores.

How many should I apply to?

A good range you should aim to apply to is 3-5. When applying, definitely consider cost of attendance, programs of study, distance, and average admission standards.

College Application Week

College Application Week is when several colleges and universities across North Carolina waive application fees, thus you can apply for FREE. This year College Application Week has been extended to 2 weeks - October 19-30. You MUST complete and submit the applications through CFNC in order for it to be free. All applications must be submitted by 5pm on October 30th!

Remember, if a school you want to apply to is not listed and you qualify for free or reduced lunch, please contact your counselor for a NACAC application fee waiver.

Here is a list of schools that participate:

Community College

When applying to colleges, don't forget about you local community colleges! There is no application fee and no due date. All you need to apply is a high school transcript and high school diploma. Many 4-year colleges and universities partner with community colleges that allows you to transfer after finishing your 2 years. This option is much more affordable as well!
